Your holiday custody planning should start right away

On Behalf of | Oct 1, 2020 | Child Custody

Navigating the holiday season is challenging for many families. The uptick in activities can make this difficult, and when you add in a child custody agreement, it gets even more complex. Some parents might be tempted to wait until the last minute to address child custody issues, but this can be a considerable mistake.

One of the best things you can do is to start looking at the parenting schedule now to find out if there are any schedule conflicts. If there are, you have time to approach your ex about making trades so the child can be at the important events. Your ex may also need some changes to be made. Just remember that handling this all respectfully can greatly reduce the amount of stress you have to deal with.

As you’re working out the parenting time schedule changes, remember that the child’s best interests must come first. For example, if your ex’s family is getting together on Christmas Eve but that’s usually your day, it might be best for the kids to go with the other parent for the day and then you can make that day up later.

You should also discuss communication for important days. Your children might want to touch base with both parents on the holiday itself, so work out terms that make this possible. Remember that any terms you and your ex agree to should be put into writing.

Your attorney can work with you to ensure that you’re handling things in an appropriate manner. If you and your ex can’t agree on how to address certain custody and visitation problems, it might be necessary to turn to the court for a resolution.
