“Southern Charm” couple splits, has child custody dispute

On Behalf of | Jun 16, 2016 | Child Custody

New York fans of “Southern Charm” may be aware that two of the reality show’s stars, 54-year-old Thomas Ravenel and 24-year-old Kathryn Dennis, have split and are arguing over custody of their children. They have a 2-year-old and a 7-month-old.

According to Dennis, Ravenel hasn’t seen his children in months or made any effort to contact her. She also says that he hasn’t contributed financial support to them. However, Ravenel is suing Dennis for custody and visitation rights. He claims that he hasn’t seen the children for weeks because Dennis will not allow him to.

Ravenel says that his lawyers have also attempted to negotiate with Dennis to no avail and that he has been paying her rent of $3,100. Furthermore, he says that the six figures she allegedly makes on “Southern Charm” mean that she is not suffering financial hardship. Ravenel’s attorney backs his story. Both Ravenel and Dennis have attacked one another on social media as well. On June 8, an initial meeting was held to seal the case. There will be a follow-up hearing on June 27.

Custody battles can be among the most difficult aspects of a divorce. Unless there is domestic abuse, children generally benefit from contact with both parents. Children also do better in divorces in which parents can get along. However, in some cases, such as one in which one parent is blocking access to the children, it is not possible to negotiate an amicable agreement. Whether parents can come to an agreement inside or outside of court, an attorney might be able to assist in the negotiation process.
