Judge rejects request to limit Chris Brown’s access

On Behalf of | May 27, 2016 | Child Custody

New York fans of singer Chris Brown may have followed his custody battle over his 1-year-old daughter Royalty. Nia Guzman, the child’s mother, requested that due to his affiliation with gangs and drug use, his access to the child should be restricted.

Allegedly, she claimed he was unfit to care for the child and requested a monitor be present when Brown is with the child. However, the judge did not agree to change the current custody arrangement. Brown will continue to have 12 days with the child each month, and he will not be supervised.

Guzman has also asked for an increase in the amount of child support paid by Brown. Reports are that she wants him to begin paying $16,000 monthly instead of the $2,500 he currently pays.

Child custody and support can be one of the most difficult things to work out in a divorce. Both parents may be concerned about the welfare of their children as well as worried about losing access. In some cases, a parent may have genuine concerns about the other parent’s fitness due to issues such as domestic abuse or addiction, and if this is the case, the parent should share those concerns with an attorney. However, if the child’s safety is not at stake, parents should keep in mind that the child may benefit from contact with both of them. Parents who can negotiate an agreement may be happier with the outcome, and coming to an amicable agreement may be better for the children as well. However, in some cases, litigation is necessary, and a judge will make a decision based on the individual needs of the child.
